The
Construction Industry Council occupies
a unique role within the UK construction industry.
Its
members represent over 350,000 professionals working for, and in association
with, the construction industry and more than 19,000 construction firms. It is
the representative forum for the industrys professional bodies, research
organisations and specialist trade associations.
The
Construction Industry Councils work is managed on a day-to day basis by a
small secretariat which works under the direction the Chief Executive who is
responsible to the Council.
The
Executive Board
acts as the main policy and strategy vehicle of the Council. Full Members of CIC
are represented through four Electoral Colleges: Chartered; Professional;
Business; Research.
The
Electoral Colleges nominate representatives to Council and Standing Committees,
through which CIC accomplishes its work. There are currently seven Standing
Committees:
Consultants;
Education
& Professional Development;
Finance;
Industry
Practices;
Innovation
& Research;
Sustainable
Development;
Standards
Each
Committee is supported by a number of task forces and project steering
committees which are established to meet the needs of current activities. The
task forces have a limited life and are disbanded when their work is complete.
The
Standards Committee is
composed of nominees from the members, together with representatives of the
National Training Organisations that operate in the Built Environment.
NVQ/SVQ
development
work is undertaken through project Validation Groups (composed of
representatives from interested Professional Institutions, NTOs and other
interested industry bodies) who oversee the development of the Qualification and
identification of Awarding arrangements on behalf of the industry sub-sector;
and a Working group of practitioners, nominated by industry organisations who
have direct experience of the functions being covered and who develop the
qualification. Development Projects are led by a nominated Practitioner from the
sub-sector and supported by an Occupational Standards Consultant (normally
in-house).
